&RQWULEXWRUV; JENNIFER WARD BARBER is a Southern California-based freelancer writer. After talking to the owner of Atlanta tea shop Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party ("Retailer Spotlight,"p. 56), she polled her Facebook friends to find out who among them had played the namesake "underwater tea party" game as kids. She was surprised that she was one of the few who had never heard of the activity. Ward Barber thinks her childhood was still pretty good, all things considered. When JULIE BEALS visited Great Wall Tea near Vancouver, B.C. ("Retailer Spotlight," p. 58), she sensed immediately that she had stepped into a special place. "Despite its tiny size and lim- ited seating, customers are undeterred," she says. Beals, a former Fresh Cup editor, is a freelance writer living in ever-drizzly Portland, Ore. "Seeing people shake off their raincoats and cozy up to the bar to warm their hands on a mug offered a pleasant feeling of déjà vu," she says. Writer and industry consultant LINDSEY GOODWIN continues her look at tea cultures across the globe with a feature on the unique nature of aromatic blends produced by France's best tea companies ("French Bliss," p. 44). Goodwin recently spent a year traveling the world to research all aspects of tea in Japan, India, England and other locales. She currently resides in Taiwan. JANE PETTIGREW ("Shaping the Taste," p. 48) has worked in several different areas of the tea industry. Since running her own tearoom in London in the 1980s, she has edited a tea trade journal and written 14 books on different aspects of tea and tea companies. She now writes for several tea and beverage magazines, runs tea master classes in London, and appears regularly on TV and radio in the United Kingdom. Regular Fresh Cup contributor DANIEL P. SMITH this month delivers the story of St. Louis café The London Tea Room ("Retailer Spotlight," p. 54). The Chicago-based Smith covers best practices and business topics for a range of consumer and trade publications. He's also the author of the book "On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department." 16 Tea Almanac 2013
