YOU CAN BREW, TOO A new book by Ristretto Roasters' Din Johnson, "How to Brew Coffee Before You've Had Coffee," makes crafting the perfect cup of morning joe a little easier—even for the most bleary-eyed coffee enthusiast. A lot goes into making a good cuppa, and Johnson offers no-nonsense tips on choosing the right grind, roast level, ratio and brewing apparatuses through a simple, well-designed guide that takes coffee brewing back to basics. 503/288-8667. ristrettoroasters.com EDUCATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT Furthering its mission to assist schools and teachers in rural coffee-growing communities, Cup for Education teamed in September with Hacienda Miramonte in Naranjo, Costa Rica, for three days of events celebrating learning and the environment. Students and teachers from a local school along with their families participated in an ecological hike, the planting of 120 new trees, the fertilizing and maintaining of existing plants, and song and dance performances. In addition, a presentation of books to supplement the existing texts available to the students was made to the principal of Naranjo's Escuela San Judas Tadeo. 718/832-0800. cupforeducation.org and haciendamiramonte.com BUILT TO LAST Portland roaster Kobos Coffee, which launched in 1973 and helped kickstart the Pacific Northwest's specialty coffee scene, is turning 40. Founded by former New York schoolteachers David and Susan Kobos, the micro-roaster was an early adopter of organic and fair-trade beans and was one of the city's first specialty coffee companies. Still 100 percent family owned and operated, Kobos remains committed to organic and farmer-friendly coffees, with more than 80 offerings including blends, roasts, fair trade, flavored coffees and teas. 800/557-5226. koboscoffee.com A PARTNERSHIP TO END HUNGER Vermont-based nonprofit Food 4 Farmers, with help from a donation from Vermont Artisan Coffee & Tea, has established a new partnership with the CESMACH coffee co-op in Chiapas, Mexico. Food 4 Farmers will work with the co-op's staff and members to implement long-term strategies to address hunger in the region. By empowering communities to identify solutions and strategies for fighting hunger, Food 4 Farmers is working to better the livelihoods of coffee growers across Latin America. 802/238-8207. food4farmers.org freshcup.com October 2013 77
