ENVIRONMENTALISM HONORED
Grounds for Change, a decade-old specialty roaster in
Poulsbo, Wash., recently picked up a Washington State
Family Business Award from Seattle Business Magazine.
The company was given the program's Community Award,
which honors a business that has displayed an ongoing
commitment to giving back to the world around it. The
roaster donates at least 1 percent of its revenues to environmental groups each year, and in 2008 it partnered
with carbonfund.org to offset all of the carbon emissions
from the transport and manufacture of the company's coffee. The photo shows Grounds for Change owners Kelsey
Marshall (left) and Stacy Marshall with Seattle Business
Magazine associate publisher Michael Romoser (center).

KEEP THE PORTAFILTER PERFECT
The Pro-Fundi from Italian company
Ambrodesign is an electronic product that
allows a barista to remove used coffee grounds
from a portafilter without the noise and effort
of slamming the tool on the side of a knockbox.
Three rotating blades on the device, which can
be bolted onto a counter beside an espresso
machine, clean out the inside of the portafilter
as well as the outer rim. A bag below the counter collects the grounds, making for a simple
process with little mess. pro-fondi.com
